Information – Badgers Y2
Well firstly I hope we have a full year of ‘in school’ learning.
Just a few reminders:
All the children have made a great start to Y2 and we have been very impressed at how hard they are learning.
We are now using a phonics scheme called Sounds Write. Last year this was used in Reception but it is the first time it will be used in Y1 and Y2. When you hear your child read, you can support them by encouraging them to “say the sounds and read the word”. We don’t use the names of the letters (A, B, C etc). Some children may be taking home some new phonics books that will help them to use the sounding out strategy. This will give you some idea of the level your child is reading at.
If you want to learn more about Sounds Write, you can do a free online course, aimed at parents. This is particularly aimed at parents of children who are reading pink, red and yellow but it does have video showing the pure sounds that we use and well worth doing. There are 2 courses and each lasts about 20 mins.
Please listen to your child read at least 3 times a week. They need to tell us if they need to change their book and will do it themselves.
The children will bring home spellings and they will get homework every week.
